The Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority and Africa50 have completed the commercial launch of the $300 million Nigeria Distributed Renewable Energy Fund, unveiled at the United Nations General Assembly. The World Bank Group is backing the vehicle as a founding partner, and the fund is structured to deploy equity investment into domestic Nigerian developers working to scale mini-grids and commercial solar infrastructure across the country.
The approach — channeling capital directly into local developers rather than large single-utility projects — reflects a growing preference among development finance institutions for distributed, decentralized energy models that can reach underserved communities faster than traditional grid extension. For Nigeria, where large portions of the population still lack reliable grid access, mini-grids and commercial solar have become key tools for expanding electricity access without waiting on slower, capital-intensive national grid upgrades.
