As global demand for AI infrastructure accelerates, a key question is emerging for Africa: can the continent’s power grids actually support the coming wave of data-centre investment? Unlike more mature markets, Africa’s electricity systems haven’t yet been overwhelmed by data-centre demand — but most weren’t built with hyperscale digital infrastructure in mind either, meaning grids will need significant upgrades before demand catches up to levels seen elsewhere.


The scale of what’s coming is significant. Estimates suggest the continent’s data-centre capacity needs could grow from around 0.4 gigawatts today to somewhere between 1.5 and 2.2 gigawatts by 2030 — a jump that would require an estimated $10–20 billion in construction investment. For context, the combined installed data-centre capacity across five of Africa’s largest digital economies — Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa — currently sits below 500 megawatts, less than France alone had in 2024.


The upside, according to industry watchers, is that Africa has vast untapped renewable energy potential — solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal — that could allow new data centres to be built on cleaner power from the start, rather than retrofitting older, carbon-heavy grids the way many developed markets have had to.
